October-Keep the Magic Alive!

Hello October!
IMG_1918.JPG

Halloween at the PNE! Fright Nights!

When we were young, my mom always made sure that we had cool costumes for special events. Early on when we first came to Canada, she sewed for a living and when school plays or music festivals came around, she used to spend time making us costumes for dress up days. I remember we would ask her to make us all sorts of things and she would stay up all night in the games room downstairs in our house in Red Deer and make them for us. Sometimes, she wouldn’t sleep just to get our outfits done! I remember going to “Fright Nights” at the Red Deer Mall every year and all of us would have home made costumes each year.
Today, I remember how fun it was when we were kids and we believed that we could do anything, be anything and really make magic happen. In my work, I take this wonder and imagination and love to bring it to my studio so that others can feel the same glimmers of magic-especially children.
This month, I invite you and your families to join in our festivities and experience some of the magic of the season! We are hosting several events and participating in trade shows where you can get your face painted, make a Halloween themed art activity or get spooked at our 5th Annual Monstars and Beasts Haunted House. If you would like to help make magic happen for others in the community, please get in touch as we are looking for volunteers to help with our Pumpkin Sale, Haunted House and set decor!

Brooklyn Photographer-Rob Lundberg

tiny  rose

family

Rob Lundberg is a Brooklyn Photographer who is becoming increasingly known for both his street photography and live music shots. Originally hailing from the Boston, Massachusetts area, Lundberg’s work goes above and beyond to captivate viewers. With an approach to the lens in a fine-arts sense, his pieces not only emits beauty, but captures the true essence, spirit and personality of his subjects. Using Crown Heights, Brooklyn as a major source of inspiration for his street photos, he gets up close and personal as he brings each person’s picture to life…with a single snap. On the other end of the realm, Lundberg has been making a name for himself as a noteworthy live music photographer, shooting artists such as the buzzworthy Pinky Doodle Poodle from Japan, to big names like The National. Varying between a mixture of black and white and color, every picture shows a small piece of his personality as an artist. Recently Lundberg self-described his work in an interview with the New York Patch as “raw, organic, candid, free, gonzo, avant garde, documentarian, observational, curious,” which is spot on. This October, he will also be debuting his work in a gallery setting at the Clio Art Fair in Chelsea, New York City. The fair runs from October 19 to the 22nd. Find tickets via the link below, and be sure to check out Rob Lundberg’s series if you are in the New York area. You will not want to miss out on seeing his unique and artistic work up close and in person.

Surrealism with Angela Latchkey

by Monika Blichar

Entering into a new world for me is what art is all about-especially when you enter the world of Angela Latchkey. She captures exactly what art for me truly means: possibility, imagination and magic. Her work inspires the grandeur of life and the realization that anything is possible when we allow our mind to play within our imagination. It is truly magical.

When_We_Are_Asleep_high_res

“I’ve dedicated my life to exploring different ways of existing through travel, study, and in depth contemplation about the world around me. I’m a kind of philosopher and my philosophy is laid down in layers of paint, to be seen, not read or heard.

I bring forward images that allow for contemplation, inspiration and happiness, since these are the things I value. My work allows you to look deeper and to FEEL deeper beyond the everyday.

It is my sincere wish that you enjoy yourself while browsing my life work.”

Let’s Touch Base with Ryan Broderick

by Monika Blichar

Ryan Broderick first came to our studio in North Van with his dad in 2015. He was barely 19 at the time and on record, our youngest exhibiting artist. Though he was young, his talent and drive to succeed in the arts has been a pleasure to watch since his first exhibit with us. He has had his work up in galleries, arts councils and has been creating innovative and unique work since we met him and likely, long before then! We caught up with Ryan and look forward to his exhibition at the 2018 Vancouver event on May 11, 2018 at Telus World of Science.

1-What inspires you as an artist?

I strongly believe that art comes in many forms, but it is all created for the same reason. It is a form of expression. Certain moments and interests in my life assist in inspiring what and how I paint. I am a story teller, but without words being spoken or written. I provide the viewer a story with the intention of sharing similar emotions through the aesthetics.

2-You showed at AWE 2017 and one of your pieces, the razor blades, was really striking and made impressions on a lot of guests. Can you tell us about this piece?

In this piece, I explore the idea of creating skin with X-Acto blades. Giving a found object a new purpose was accomplished by using the two different coloured blades to create the human head. The X-Acto blades create a sense of dimension, as well as a layer of protection for the figure. The eyes have been painted in order to create a glare that pulls the viewer into feeling this figure is a real human. The eyes create questioning of the thoughts going on in the figures mind. The X-Acto blades on the other hand, creates a distance and pushes the viewer back. The X-Acto blades are to represent the first layer of skin that humans put up against others.

3-What mediums do you like to work in the most?

I ideally work with acrylic paint as it dries fast. This allows me to work on a piece for a long duration of time. However, I have recently found an enjoyment using found objects, for instance the razor blades. I found this to be a challenging material to work with, but it gives a mesmerizing result. The use of the razor blades created a dimensional wall piece rather than a flat image.

4-As an artist, what do you think has been the most significant piece that you have made to date?

My razor blade art piece has had the biggest impact on people and has created the most conversation. The style creates a distinct touch that can further be noticed as a piece done by me. This art piece takes on a new aspect on materials and a new element to art. I found a lot of people were surprised once they realized what it was made out of and it hadthem asking questions. The want of asking questions is exactly what I try to create through my art.

5-Will you have Art World Expo special offers or limited edition works available this year?

I will not have any special offers or limited edition works but I will have on display more art like the razor blade piece. These will be ongoing art projects I do over the next few months and could range in materials. The Art World Expo is intended to be the first showing of these pieces for the public to view in person. Photographs online will be the only interaction to get a feel for the art before getting up close and personal.

6-Where would you like to see your art career go in the next 5 years?

I plan on having my Master’s Degree in the Fine Arts Visual Arts. This will hopefully open up opportunities to have galleries represent me and allow my art to be more available to the public.
