What inspired you to start designing clothing?
I grew up around beautiful vibrant wax prints and a community of women that loved to dress up. I started giving pointers to tailors on what styles I wanted when getting outfit tailored. After moving to Canada from Burkina Faso, I missed being able to readily access affordable tailors and wear my usual colorful and warm weather outfits. I gradually started learning how to sew and started designing clothes that mixed various fabrics to give me the finish I wanted with the comfort that is adequate to the various Canadian seasons. You can say my inspiration started by trying to wear outfits that were not available in Canada and grew to trying to offer the same access to a wider audience.
Your work is colorful, vibrant and unique. What is your inspiration behind this season’s designs?
I choose most of the colors and designs based on how the fabrics appeal to me. Sometimes you see a fabric and you just have to make something out of it or it inspires the style you need to bring to life. Even though it is cold or winter, I believe we can and ought to wear colorful and vibrant clothes. Seasons can definitely affect our choice of colors but it should not limit us to grey and black.
You create a variety of fashion. What do you like to design the most?
I enjoy seeing more than one fabric mixed together to yield an elegant and slick finish. Being able to design, a piece that is fresh, elegant and unique is what I love designing the most. Dressing women of various body shapes is the most exciting!
This is your first time in an Art World Expo event. What would you like guests to know most about you and your clothing line?
This approach of design, work with unique prints is quite new to most people in Canada. Although inspired by beautiful African prints it also incorporates lots of fabric usually found in current fashion. This is meant for all and everyone that wishes to dress elegantly and with unique pieces. Do not be shy and try one of our piece be it an accessory or a full outfit, you will love it.
Will you have any show specials or never before seen work at this event?
I will have a special gift certificate that the guests can enter to win. They can then have the pleasure to choose what to spend it on, as it would be too restrictive to choose one item for the winner.
Just for fun. If you woke up tomorrow with access to an unlimited bank account with funds just for you to spend, what would you do?
I would definitely expand my business, have a physical store, work space, start a partnership with locally hand woven, die, and tie fabric producers back in Burkina Faso and Africa in general so I can infuse some investment on the continent while exporting the expertise and beautiful prints to the rest of the world.
Kaborette ya nèré is a fashion business that is striving to offer modern ready to wear and African infused attire to the Afro-Canadian community across Canada while working to carve a space in the fashion world for African prints. The business specializes in incorporating traditional woven material from West Africa, vibrant African prints commonly known as “Ankara” with European fabric in its stylish designs. Kaborette ya nèré offers clothes, and clothing accessories and is based here in Edmonton.
The founder and in-house designer of Kaborette ya nèré is Alèthe Kaboré. Born and raised in Burkina Faso, she moved to Edmonton to pursue her studies and could not leave behind her love for African prints and fashion. Alèthe has always had an eye for colors and forms and has a keen interest in fashion design. She is a self-taught designer and seamstress with still a lot to learn and as much to contribute to the fashion world. Her dream is to increase the use of African prints and material in modern wear in Canadian fashion and internationally. Alèthe is looking forward to showcasing her creations and dressing you too!

As an artist, looking for new ways on how to market, promote and sell your work this fall can be intimidating. Many of us fall into the same routine and often forget that seasonal promotions are a great way to engage new customers, create special products or service packages, and most importantly have fun doing so! Today, I have compiled five fall sales ideas for artists to help you take advantage of a this wonderful fall season!
1-Create a Fall Promotion for your Product or Service
It sounds simple and it can be! What is your best selling product or service? What do you enjoy making or doing the most? Start with these two questions and then build from there. If you are a photographer, offer a Fall Mini Session for Kids in a Pumpkin Patch. If you are a painter, create an image of a fall harvest scene and then offer prints or greeting cards in time for Thanksgiving. Be sure to offer a special or incentive for customers to buy from you such as limiting the number of sales you will make for the promotion or offering a limited edition run of your prints. The possibilities are endless!
Working together can be better than working on your own. Who can you partner up with to offer a special package, gift basket or service package with? Some of the benefits of working with others include reaching new markets, sharing the task of marketing, and cross promoting on each other’s networks.
3-Run a Contest!
A simple thing like “Guess How Many Candy Corn are in this Jar and Win” can help you gain new customers, get shared and also keep your followers engaged. If you’re always posting about your product and your service without giving your fan base something to look forward to like a contest or a special, you will loose opportunities for your fans and followers to help you build your brand by sharing it and tagging their friends. What could you do that will help engage your fan base this fall?\
4-Plan an Event!
Aside from things you can do to promote your business this fall online or via social media, be sure to host an open studio, special event, or workshop for your business! There’s nothing like connecting with people face to face! Here are some ideas for events:
-Fall Sidewalk Sale
-Start or End of Fall Season Sale
-VIP Fall Shopping Party
-Fall Customer Appreciation Event
-Fall Themed Art Show
Hosting a special event is a great way to feature your space and your business in person. Ask other businesses to donate door prizes, get involved or even donate their space and partner up with them if you don’t have a space that is suitable for the public. When I first started my business, I didn’t want people coming to my home studio so I often partnered up with other businesses and would host events, shows, and openings in cafes, restaurants and even car dealerships.
There are lots of ways that you can join community events-and not just markets or fairs! Here are some ideas for you to look into this year or next:
–Kids Sporting Events: sponsor a tent and hand out samples, give out water with your logo on the bottle, or enter attendees into a draw.
–Pop Up: Ask a coffee shop if you can do a pop up for a day in their cafe, bring a table with your work and promote to the cafe goers!
–Local Businesses: Find other businesses in your area who are hosting events and offer your time, a product to donate, or ask if you can have a small table at their event.
So what are you waiting for? Pick something and get going on creating a cool fall promotion or event that will help you generate more brand recognition, new customers and followers, and most of all, create more fun and joy for you in your business!

1-When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
I never knew I wanted to be a designer, I always thought I wasn’t very creative until the passion for millinery entered my life. When I came to Vancouver from the UK eight years ago I started working for the hat store on Granville Island and felt shy selling hats as it was my first retail job. So I started cleaning and repairing hats as a way to keep in the background and fell in love with classic men’s hats, they are definitely my biggest passion. The lines, shapes and history sparked my interest and I undertook a short course to learn how to block hats traditionally.
2-What inspired you to become a hat designer?
After the millinery intro course I started looking at different styles and moved into free form hat making, this is more organic than blocking because its just me manipulating the felt or straw to create shapes, it’s like there is a hat inside the material waiting to come out. From here I started doing custom work and mixing free hand and traditional blocking techniques, I always custom free hand the crowns of the men’s hats I make. I also restore hats for people who have a well loved piece that needs cleaning and fixing up, I like the thought that I’m keeping a piece of history alive. I enjoy experimenting with new materials and pushing the boundaries of what is traditionally made using them. The feeling of completing a free-form crown that could never be made on a traditional block or draping fabrics to create organic headpieces that no-one else is making, that’s when I feel the buzz of actually creating something new. As an artisinal craft, millinery is little known and I love the idea that I am keeping a tradition alive.
3-What is your favourite material to work with?
Most definitely Abaca silk as its amazing to sculpt with, it’s a blend of silk and abaca fibre, which is banana palm fibre, you’ll see some pieces in my show. I enjoy all of the mediums I work with and I like to try out new things (I knitted a top hat out of copper wire for a show a couple of years ago, I remember someone saying you couldn’t so I decided I would go ahead and give it a go!)
4-You have done quite a few shows and made hats and fascinators for events and galas. What would you tell an up and coming designer about the fashion industry and how to get noticed?
This is still quite new for me and I’m still working on trying to make people take notice, there’s always a lot of people who want something for nothing so you need to filter out what you want your business stance to be. Always wear a piece of your own work, I’m always wearing one of my hats, actually my husband is generally wearing one too! Its a hard industry to be noticed in, small designers generally don’t have a huge budget for marketing and events so it really is about getting out and being seen putting yourself out there. And don’t give up, your passion should always drive you, eventually if you shout loud enough people will hear.
5-Where do you see yourself in 5 years.
I want to have a store/ design studio in which people can have a hat made while they wait, it will also be a space to teach more people the craft. Eventually I want to have my hats sold all over Canada and America and have a reputation for excellence and innovation. I want to do more shows and become known as a Vancouver hat maker that makes amazing men’s hats and cool fascinators for hat connoisseurs.
6-This year, you are doing a hat show at the annual Art World Expo and you have been making pieces especially for this event. Can you describe a little of what guests can expect this year?
Expect to see a mixture of traditional pieces and free form sculptural head wear, some bold statement pieces and some more classic hats. You’ll have wait to see what the material wants to be.
MJ immigrated from England nearly 8 years ago and found herself working in a hat store on Granville Island. She had no idea how to sell, so started watching how hats were cleaned and repaired. She caught the bug and started to research the whole process at home learning traditional techniques. She started making hats about 5 years ago again using traditional techniques. Her business has grown from there! She now has a studio on Commercial Drive and makes custom hats on original wooden blocks and also repairs vintage hats. She feels lucky enough to be one of those people who love their jobs! Visit her Facebook or Website
